Terms of use

Sonar collects headlines from the public feeds of crypto outlets, gathers reprints of the same news into a single story, and counts which topics they cover and whether coverage is positive, neutral or negative.

Tone and topic are determined automatically by a language model, and reprints are gathered by comparing texts. Both make mistakes: a model can misread irony, and two different stories can be merged into one. The figures are an estimate of what is being published, not a fact about the market.

The site is free and needs no sign-up. You may read it, link to it and quote its figures. If you publish Sonar charts or data, name Sonar as the source.

The API can be called without a key, under the limits of the free plan. A key gives a larger request budget and a deeper history. Current plans, limits and prices are listed on the Pricing page.

Keys are issued by hand after a request. Fees for paid plans, the key's term and billing terms are agreed with you when the key is issued; until they are, a key is not a paid one. There is no payment on the site at the moment.

A key is issued to you or your team. Keep it secret and do not share it outside. If a key leaks, write to us and we will revoke it and issue a new one.

Limits are applied automatically: once a budget is spent the API answers with status 429 until the minute or the day is over. We may change limits and plans; we will tell holders of a paid plan in advance before changing it.

Do not get around the limits by using several addresses or keys to take more than your plan gives. Do not put load on the service that disrupts it, and do not try to reach the admin console or other people's keys.

Do not present Sonar's data as your own or resell it as a dataset without our consent. Using it inside your own product is fine — that is what the API is for.

If these rules are broken we may restrict access from an address or revoke a key.

We show the headline, the outlet's name, the publication time and a link to the original. A story image, when the publisher's feed has one, is loaded from the publisher's site. Article texts belong to their publishers: we read them only for the automatic assessment and do not publish them on the site or through the API.

We download articles only where robots.txt allows it, and no more often than once every two seconds per site, or less often if robots.txt asks for that.

If you represent an outlet and do not want to be in Sonar, write to us from an address on the outlet's domain. We will stop collecting your feed, take your headlines off the site and delete the stored texts of your articles.

The service is provided “as is”. We do not guarantee that it will run without interruption, that the data will be complete, accurate or timely, or that any source will keep publishing. Feeds disappear and assessments can be wrong.

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for losses, lost profits or lost data arising from using Sonar or being unable to use it, including trading or investment decisions made with our data in mind. If you pay for a key, our liability in any case does not exceed what you paid us over the last three months.

We may change these terms. A new version takes effect from the date shown at the top of the page. We will email key holders in advance about material changes that affect paid keys. If you keep using the service after a change, you accept the new version.
